Come be a part of history!

This is Rob Cheyne from Safelight Security Advisors, and I’d like to say a few words about the SOURCE conference. I typically go to 2-3 conferences a year, and they all involve planes and hotels, and have thousands and thousands of people. When I found out that there were plans for a Boston-based security conference that combined the hacking world with the business world in an intimate setting, my first thoughts were like Mike’s: “I definitely want to go to that!”

Shortly afterwards, I found out that Source had an opening on the advisory board and I jumped at the opportunity! Not only do I get to attend the east coast’s premier security conference, but I get to help make it happen? It was a no-brainer. In the past, I have occasionally wondered why the good security conferences tend to be on the west coast, and I am pretty psyched to help change that.

One of the things I am particularly excited about is the chance to moderate a panel discussion that I have wanted people to have for years as a security consultant.

The gist is this: developers want to build security into their systems, but frequently say, “my manager doesn’t give me enough time for this”. When I speak to their manager, they say “I would love to give them more time, but I don’t have the budget”, and of course the executives say “I have lots of conflicting needs for the budget, so we have to pick and choose what is important”. There are many variations of this conversation, but you get the idea.

The panel we have put together sits down representatives from all levels of the organization to finally have this conversation. It puts the people that are down in the trenches at the same table with the decision-makers so that we can try and find some middle ground. Security is a process and is all about balancing business requirements and security requirements, and my hope is that this panel will help us find this balance.

Oh, and did we mention the pub crawl? ;-)

So come and join us in creating a part of history in the security industry. There is nothing else like this out there for the price, and it’s going to be a blast!

See you there.
